World IBD Day 2016

World IBD Day is marked on the 19th May each year.

On the weekend of the 14th May 2016, The Lord Mayor of Manchester, welcomed the ‘Walk It Manchester’ in recognition and support of those with Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. A gentle stream of purple walkers trickled through the busy streets of the city of Manchester to mark the first “Walk It Manchester” event held in support of Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

The event, held by Crohn’s and Colitis UK, was opened by the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Paul Murphy OBE, who expressed his concern and support for sufferers of the debilitating disease, delivering a very well informed and supportive opening to the event.

Armed with maps the walkers began their navigation from Cathedral Gardens. As the sun made several appearances, the purple walkers remained undeterred by the bustling streets and wonderful aromas wafting from the food markets. The walk, as hoped, drew some attention from the natives but it was evident that public awareness of Inflammatory Bowel Disease is still a fundamental issue. Nonetheless the happy walkers seemed to enjoy the scenic route.

It is hoped that support for Crohn’s and Colitis UK continues to grow and that the event is even bigger next year as awareness of Crohn’s and Colitis is raised. Thursday, 19 May is World IBD day; let’s show our support by wearing purple!!
